DHCP / IPoE billing

Bill DHCP and static IP customers as easily as PPPoE

Many ONTs and customer routers can’t dial PPPoE. With IPoE, Wave recognises each customer’s device by its MAC address when it asks for an IP, so you can bill them on the same plans and cut them off the same way.

Quick answer

What is IPoE billing?

IPoE (IP over Ethernet) billing gives customers internet through plain DHCP instead of a PPPoE login. The router asks the billing system about each device’s MAC address before handing out an IP, so only paid-up customers get online. Wave runs this on MikroTik with RADIUS-backed DHCP, short leases and optional fixed IPs.

What you get

DHCP / IPoE billing, done properly.

  • Recognised by MAC

The router checks each device with Wave before giving it an address. Unpaid devices don’t get online.

  • Fixed IPs when you need them

Give business customers a fixed IP. Static IP customers are simply IPoE customers with an address of their own.

  • No sticker-reading

Devices Wave hasn’t seen yet appear in a “new devices” list. Add the right one to a customer in one click.

  • Cut off like PPPoE

Leases are short and never run past the end of the plan, so expired customers drop off on time.

  • Same plans, same invoices

IPoE customers use your PPPoE packages, invoices, reminders and M-Pesa renewals.

  • Ready for TR-069

IPoE ports can hand out your ACS address so new customer routers check in for remote management.

How it works

From setup to selling.

  1. 01

    Set a port to DHCP/IPoE

Wave sets up the DHCP server, address pool and RADIUS checks on the MikroTik.

  2. 02

    Plug in the customer

Their device shows up in the new devices list within minutes.

  3. 03

    Add it to a customer

One click links the MAC to the customer and their package, with an optional fixed IP.

  4. 04

    Bill as usual

Reminders, invoices, expiry and reconnection work exactly like PPPoE.

Questions

DHCP / IPoE billing: your questions answered.

What is the difference between PPPoE and IPoE?

PPPoE customers log in with a username and password set on their router. IPoE customers just plug in and get an address by DHCP; the network recognises them by their device’s MAC address. IPoE suits ONTs and routers that can’t dial PPPoE.

Can I bill static IP customers?

Yes. In Wave, a static IP customer is an IPoE customer with a fixed address. They are billed, reminded and cut off at expiry like any other customer.

Do I need to type MAC addresses?

No. The MAC printed on a device is often its LAN address, not the one the network sees. Wave lists the devices that actually asked for an address so you can pick the right one.

What happens when an IPoE plan expires?

The device’s lease runs out at the end of the plan and Wave refuses a new one until the customer pays, so they lose internet on time.
