Hotspot billing

MikroTik hotspot billing with M-Pesa built in

Visitors join your WiFi, pick a plan on your own branded login page, approve an M-Pesa prompt and they are online. Nobody has to sell a scratch card or type a login.

Quick answer

How does M-Pesa hotspot billing work?

A visitor connects to your WiFi and your MikroTik router sends them to your Wave login page. They choose a plan, enter their M-Pesa number and approve the prompt on their phone. Wave confirms the payment, logs them in on the router automatically and disconnects them when the plan’s time is up. The money goes straight to your own till, paybill or bank account.

What you get

Hotspot billing, done properly.

  • Your brand on the login page

Logo, colour, name, a welcome line and a help line, with a live phone preview while you edit.

  • Three ways in

Buy with M-Pesa, enter a voucher, or sign in as a subscriber. Switch each one on or off.

  • English and Kiswahili

Choose the language visitors see first; they can switch with one tap.

  • Plans by the hour or month

Sell 1-hour, daily, weekly or monthly plans with download and upload limits, burst speeds and optional fair usage caps.

  • Printable vouchers

Generate voucher batches for any plan, print them on a sheet or export them, and sell them for cash.

  • Set up on the router for you

Wave points the router’s login page at your portal and opens the walled garden so visitors can pay before they have internet.

How it works

From setup to selling.

  1. 01

    Choose a hotspot port

Pick which router port serves your hotspot. Wave configures the MikroTik hotspot and login redirect.

  2. 02

Add plans and style the page

Create your plans, choose which ones are on sale and set your logo and colours.

  3. 03

    Visitors pay and connect

They approve an M-Pesa prompt and are logged in on the router as soon as the payment clears.

  4. 04

    Watch the sales come in

Every sale shows in your wallet and reports, per router, with the M-Pesa receipt.

Questions

Hotspot billing: your questions answered.

Do I need my own captive portal server?

No. Wave hosts the WiFi login page. When you set a router port to Hotspot, Wave replaces the router’s login page with a redirect to your Wave portal and allows that address in the walled garden.

Can visitors pay for WiFi with M-Pesa?

Yes. They enter their number on the login page, approve the M-Pesa prompt and are connected automatically once the payment is confirmed. There is nothing to type into the router.

Can I still sell printed vouchers?

Yes. Generate a batch of vouchers for any plan, print them or export them, and sell them in your shop. Visitors type the code on the login page.

What happens when a hotspot plan runs out?

Wave disconnects the visitor on the router when their time is up. They can buy another plan from the same login page.

How much does hotspot billing cost?

Wave charges 3% of the hotspot sales paid through Wave, with a minimum of KES 515 a month across all your services. Vouchers you print and sell for cash are not charged.

Ready to stop chasing payments?

Create your account today. The Wave team activates new ISPs, then you connect a router with one line and start selling.
